Thi’s triumph in securing the right job

From the moment she stepped into APM Employment Services’ Upper Mount Gravatt office, her employment consultant, Almaree, could sense Thi’s eagerness to find a job.

Despite her enthusiasm, Thi was worried that her age might be a barrier to achieving her goal.

As a devoted grandmother, Thi cares for her grandson and granddaughter, both of whom live with disability.

So she needed a job that would accommodate her caregiving responsibilities.

Recognising the challenges she faced, Thi joined the Disability Employment Services program through APM to help her navigate the job market and access support for her own mental health condition.

Thi’s journey began with sharing her interests and previous experience, which allowed Almaree to tailor the program’s support to her needs.

With a background in hospitality, Thi was keen to return to the industry.

Guided by Almaree, she diligently applied for various roles and participated in work trials to ensure the positions were a good fit.

Thi’s hard work soon paid off when she was referred to a position as a Kitchen Steward at the Westin Hotel.

Excited by the opportunity, Thi successfully interviewed for the job.

With an incredibly supportive new employer, Thi was able to secure shorter shifts throughout the week to ensure she could meet her caregiving commitments.

When Thi had completed her six-month probationary period she was presented with a certificate by her employer, marking this significant milestone and demonstrating her value as part of the team.

Thi expressed her thanks to APM and her employment consultant, saying, “Thank you so much for your help and for always being so kind to me.”

Almaree was equally thrilled, praising Thi’s positive “can-do” attitude as one of her many strengths.

Thi’s story shows the impact of personalised support and the incredible achievements that can be made when determination meets opportunity.
